BUILDING A TEAM
Want to know the biggest secret behind my success? Having an amazing team in place.
So, how do you figure out who the right people are to place on your team?
Well, I think you have to give people a chance. Then learn to recognize when you have good people and do whatever it takes to hold on to them.
Start by compensating them well for the work they do and making it imopossible for them to leave. Also, practice sticking with them even through the bumpy times- this is the key to team building.
For instance, my managing attorney has been with me fot 15 years. My office manager has been with me for 20 years. That doesnt happen by chance. It happens with purpose and intention.
And, while everyone has good weeks and bad weeks- sticking together and being involved with their lives is the rule.
I watched my father build teams in his various businesses. From his oil field supply store to rig crews to his remodeling business for residential and commercial real estate- his managment method was to fit in with the employees as if he was one of them.
Start by compensating them well for the work they do and making it impossible for them to leave.
To keep your team happy, I recommend a non-stuffy atmosphere. Keep your core, close-knit group together and think of it like a sports team. Make it a fun, exciting place to motiate your team. Do a lot of fun activities. And it will create an atmosphere that is motivating for everyone.
Back in the beginning, we had office “happy hour” times, trips to Vegas, white water rafting trips, played games and practical jokes on each other, and kept up the great mood in the office. I try to keep things innovative and give the team permission to fail. I give new attorneys a lot of freedom. I feel like they have the greatest opportunity to learn by working the hours they want to work.
Remember, you should only be concered with the big picture. Are all the clients happy? Do all the clients like their attorney? Are we getting complaints? Are we getting fired?
As my practice has developed, I’ve evolved into higher quality people and in not only one location.
EMPOWER YOUR TEAM. IF YOU BELIEVE IN THEM THEN THEY WILL WORK HARD TO MAKE YOUR FIRM SUCCESSFUL
If you want to start down a path towards less time in the office, I recommend that you start by learning how to delegate. Make sure you let someone else know that they are ultimately responsible. Assign a managing partner and have them report to you regularly. The more you can trust in your time away.
And it’s the flexability that I’ve been able to achive by building this dream. I believe that enjoying life should be equal if not more important than working hard. And we should make the life we’ve dreamed of having the priority in our life.
